Overview

Travel to the land of five rivers, Punjab, for some heart warming hospitality, a large hearted disposition and to celebrate life with some of the most vivacious communities of India. Get those taste buds all geared up, as one cannot say no to food in this State. With a deep rooted culture and tradition in Sikhism, your trip is going to open out your eyes into an ethnicity which is not spread across Indian – just the Northern States. The five rivers of Punjab, namely, Beas, Sutlej, Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi, make the state extremely conducive to agriculture, thus percolating a pleasant rural yet prosperous feel to most parts of the State. Places like Amritsar, Bathinda, Patiala, Jalandhar and Pathankot house a rich traditional past into the lives of the Sikh Gurus. Some of the most fantastic Gurdwaras are based out of Punjab. The proximity of the border to the adjoining Pakistan, the Wagah border receives it fair share of tourists for the ceremony each evening. Though the state is not high on the travel itineraries of India, some towns like Amritsar get hoardes of visitors each day.

Location

Punjab is located in northwest of India and it is surrounded by Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.

History

Recent archaeological excavations revealed that Punjab's history can be traced as far back as the Indus Valley Civilisation. Chandigarh, the state's capital was India's first planned city. Pierre Jeanneret, one of Chandigarh's planners asked for ashes to be immersed in Sukhna Lake. Punjab, the state was created in 1947 after Indian independence.

Language

The local language is Punjabi. Hindi is spoken commonly as well. English is spoken by people in big cities and those associated with tourism.

Cuisine

Punjab is filled with fertile fields and people here love to eat. The state's most famous dish is “makke ki roti and sarso ka saag” which is topped off with a giant glass of lassi. In big cities like Chandigarh and Amritsar one can find many international food chains but nothing beats the local cuisine of Punjab.

Festivals

One of the state’s most important festivals is Baisakhi. This marks the Punjabi New Year and is celebrated with lots of music, dancing and feasts. It falls on the 13th of April, every year. Another important regional festival is Basant Panchami, which is celebrated in February or March to welcome spring. Kite flying is an integral part of the festival and people are dressed in bright yellow, which signifies joy and a golden harvest. Read more
