Kannur
Kannur is a district in north Kerala. It derives its name from Kannan (Lord Krishna) and Ur (place) making it a place of Lord Krishna. It is considered the cradle of many a folk art and culture of Kerala and is described as the land of Looms and Lores. It has rich tribal tradition of plays and dances which are performed during festivals.

Location

With the Lakshadweep Sea to its west and the Western Ghats to its east, Kannur is bounded by a wealth of natural beauty. It is blessed with beaches, hill stations, rivers, backwaters, historical monuments and religious centers. It is well connected by road, rail and air. The Kannur railway station is a major station of the Southern Railways. The closest airport is the Calicut International airport which is 125 kms from Kannur.

History

Recorded history starts with the Mooshaka kings ruling over Chirakal and the Kasargod areas. The arrival of the Portuguese, Arabs, the English and the French and the rule of Tipu Sultan ensured that Kannur remained as a hot zone of politics. Read more
