Darjeeling is a small himalayan town in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is at an average elevation of 6710 ft. Darjeeling is known for its tea industry and The Darjeeling Himalayan Railways is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, operating one of the last steam locomotives in India. The town developed in the mid-19th century when the British set up a sanatorium and established a military depot in the area.

Until the early 19th century Darjeeling was caught in a power struggle between the Kingdom of Sikkim and the Gorkhas of Nepal. The arrival of the British changed the narrative and with the laying of the first road connecting it to the plains in 1842, Darjeeling quickly developed into a summer capital of the Bengal Presidency. Today it remains a top hill destination for Indians and travelers from across the world.

Darjeeling lies in the Lesser Himalayan range and is towered by the higher Himalayan peaks. Mt. Kanchenjunga, the world’s 3rdhighest peak is very prominently visible and on a clear day Nepal’s Mt. Everest can also be seen. Darjeeling is very well connected by road, rail and air with the nearest airport at Bagdogra, a distance of 90 kms. Nearest railway station is in New Jalpaiguri. Read more
