Located midway between Kollam and Kochi is Alleppey. It is 63 kms from Ernakulam and 155 kms from Thekkady.

Alleppey was an old trading port. Its interconnecting canals and wealthy trading history afforded the title “The Venice of the East.” Raja Kesava Das is hailed as the ‘Maker of modern Alleppey'. He constructed roads, canals and built warehouses. In 1859, the first modern factory for the manufacture of coir mats and mattings was established.

Alleppey's cuisine is extremely rich and delicious. Juicy, fresh produce is used to make regional delicacies. Sea food is the highlight of this coastal region and a glass of toddy is used to complement any meal.

Perhaps the most famous festivals held in Alleppey and in the surrounding villages are the annual “snakeboat” races. It is a major tourist attraction. Alleppey is the land of the backwaters and cruises on them is a favourite amongst visitors. Some of India's oldest churches can be found in and around Alleppey. Read more
